Topic: Fairness
Watch for next Month’s 10 Second Biz Bite
on the topic of ‘Anger'
“No fair,” you moan as you get blindsided by something you
didn’t see coming in your business.
One of my favourite very grownup answers to the fairness questions
of youth is 'Where on earth did you ever get the idea that life
was going to be fair?!!'
Fairness doesn't mean we always get what we want. (“Yes, thank
you. I'll take the happy life with no suffering behind door
number one.”) Fairness isn't even necessarily synonymous with
equal treatment.
Say a man has two apples to give away and there are two people
to give them to. The man decides to give both apples to one
person. “No fair,” you say. Ah, but how do you know?
Remember blind justice looks without bias on all the facts.
Does it change your judgment to learn that the person who got
both apples had none to begin with while the person who didn't
get any had a whole stockroom full of apples already?
True fairness requires objectivity and broad perspective. Doing
business is an opportunity to do good business and even better
- an opportunity to do fair business. You can make a difference
- even if it’s just in your little part of the planet. Think
back on the past month and ahead to the next one. How can you
incorporate more ‘conscious fairness’ into your business dealings?
I look forward to your thoughts and comments!
