Did You Know?

"The one thing that drives Victoria the most is migration from the rest of Canada. We haven’t been in a net loss since 1986 when we came out of a recession. In the last few years we’ve seen an enormous influx from the rest of Canada - but very few of retirement age. The majority are 35 - 50 years of age and they are buying houses, getting into the workforce and more than anything else taking us from being a flat econony to a hot economy."
Ken Stratford, Commissioner, Greater Victoria Economic Development Commission - Jan 2006.

The 10-Second Biz Bite

Topic: Common Sense

Watch for next month’s 10-Second Biz Bite on the topic ‘Disappointments’

Common Sense by definition is truths and sensibilities that are common to many. Many? But my perspective on what is Common Sense may be quite different from yours....in fact very little makes sense to many.

Think of anything you consider Common Sense and you can think of an exception. Yes, it is Common Sense to drive on the right side here but think of the poor souls that haven’t!

In business we need to be constantly challenging our assumptions - what we assume is Common Sense or knowledge. Primary research happens when we ask people today what they need or want or think, as devoid of our assumptions as possible, then we compile the results and THEN make conclusions from them to guide our business planning.

Try this little test. Write down 3 things that you consider Common Sense and then ask someone else their views. You will be reminded how diverse we all are and why we need to ask more before we declare something ‘Common Sense’ - or worse 'but that's just the way I have always done it'!

I look forward to your thoughts and comments! Send to info@victoriabusinesstalk.com
